Reliable Rides When Driving Is No Longer an Option

Door-to-door transportation throughout Mercer County and beyond for essential needs

MCCoA’s transportation program helps older adults maintain independence and stay connected by providing scheduled rides where they need to go. Typical destinations include medical and dental appointments, pharmacies, grocery stores, and the senior center for lunches and activities. Medical trips are often given first priority so that important health appointments are not missed.

Our vehicles serve communities across Mercer County and, in some cases, can travel to certain out-of-county medical destinations when appropriate. Vans are accessible for walkers and wheelchairs, and drivers are trained to assist riders safely on and off the vehicle. Seniors are encouraged to call ahead—usually 24 to 48 hours in advance—to schedule a ride and discuss any mobility needs.

Freedom to Get Where You Need to Go

Transportation that restores independence and eases the burden on family

With affordable, accessible rides provided by trusted local drivers, seniors can keep appointments, run errands, and join social activities without relying on relatives or risking unsafe driving.

Transportation Services FAQs

What seniors and families need to know before scheduling a ride

  • Who is eligible for Transportation Services?

Transportation is primarily available to Mercer County residents age 60 or older who need rides for medical appointments, shopping, and other essential trips. In some cases, limited rides may also be available for certain disabled individuals under age 60, depending on funding  and program guidelines.  (Funds for the Under 60 prgram are provided, in part, by a grant from the Mercer County Civic Foundation.) Our staff can explain the details and help determine eligibility based on your specific situation. The goal is to ensure those who truly need safe, assisted transportation have a dependable option.

  • What types of trips can I schedule?

You can request rides to medical and dental appointments, pharmacies, grocery stores, and the senior center for lunch or activities. Medical appointments are generally given scheduling priority, since they are vital to health and wellbeing. When capacity allows, transportation may also be available for other important errands or community destinations. If you’re unsure whether your trip qualifies, simply ask when you call.

  • How much does a ride cost?

Transportation operates on a suggested-donation basis rather than a fixed fare. A typical suggested contribution might be around $15.00 for an in-county trip and $20.00 for certain out-of-county medical trips, which helps cover fuel, maintenance, and driver time. However, donations are always voluntary—no senior is denied a ride if they cannot afford to contribute. This approach keeps transportation accessible, even for those on a very limited income.

  • Are the vehicles wheelchair-accessible and safe?

Yes, our vehicles are equipped to accommodate wheelchairs and walkers, and drivers are trained to assist riders safely in boarding, securing mobility devices, and exiting the vehicle. For everyone’s safety, we may ask that certain home access needs—such as a safe ramp or appropriate steps—be in place before rides begin. Vehicles are regularly maintained and inspected to ensure they are reliable for the many miles they travel each year. Seniors and families can feel confident that safety is always a top priority.

  • How do I schedule a ride, and how far in advance should I call?

To schedule transportation, call MCCoA and provide your name, address, destination, and appointment time or reason for the trip. We recommend calling at least 24 to 48 hours in advance, and earlier if possible for medical appointments, so we can plan routes and confirm availability. Our staff will let you know your pickup window and any instructions for the ride day. Once set up, many seniors schedule recurring rides, such as weekly shopping trips or regular visits to their doctor or the senior center.
