More Than Services – A Community for Seniors

Daily opportunities to connect, move, learn, and have fun

At the Mercer County Council on Aging, we’re not just here to help with needs—we’re also here to make life richer, brighter, and more connected. Our Activities & Programs bring older adults together for social events, classes, games, wellness opportunities, and special outings that turn “another day at home” into something to look forward to. Many activities are open to all older adults, and in many cases to the general public, so friends and family are welcome to join. Staying active and socially engaged is one of the best ways to support physical, mental, and emotional health, and there’s always a new way to get involved here.

Easy to Join, Easy to Stay Involved

Flexible schedules, low costs, and plenty of ways to connect

Most activities are free or very low cost, and many are “drop in” friendly—no complicated sign-ups required, just come when you’re able. Our monthly newsletter and events calendar highlight all upcoming activities, classes, and special events so you can plan your week and find the options that excite you most.

If transportation is a concern, our senior transportation program can often bring you to and from the center so you don’t have to miss out. We’re always adding new clubs and classes based on what participants tell us they’d like to see, so if you have a hobby, interest, or skill to share, we’d love to hear your ideas and help you bring them to life.

Activities & Programs FAQs

Answers for seniors, families, and anyone thinking about joining

  • Who can participate in MCCoA activities and programs?

Most of our activities are designed for older adults, but many are open to the general public—friends, family members, and community supporters are often welcome. Seniors from across Mercer County and nearby communities regularly attend, and you do not need to be a “member” in a formal sense to join in. If a particular event has age guidelines or special requirements, we’ll clearly note that in our calendar or newsletter. In general, if you’re interested, we want you here and will help you find the right fit.

  • Do I have to sign up for activities ahead of time?

Many of our regular programs—such as bingo, card games, coffee hours, and some exercise classes—are drop-in friendly, meaning you can simply show up during the scheduled time. Certain events, like special parties, trips, or limited-size classes, may require advance registration so we can plan food, materials, or transportation. Our newsletter and calendar will clearly indicate when sign-up is needed and how to reserve your spot. If you’re unsure, just call the center and we’ll let you know what’s required.

  • What does it cost to participate in activities?

Most daily activities, social gatherings, and many classes are free or offered at a very low cost to keep them accessible to everyone. For some special programs, meals, or trips, there may be a small fee or suggested donation to help cover expenses. We always strive to keep costs reasonable and will work with you if finances are a concern. Our goal is that money should not be the reason someone misses out on staying active and connected.

  • How can I find out what’s happening each week or month?

Our events calendar and monthly newsletter list all upcoming activities, classes, support groups, and special events in an easy-to-read format. You can pick up a printed copy at the center, request to have one mailed or emailed to you, or check the schedule online if available. Staff are also happy to walk you through what’s coming up and help you choose activities that match your interests and comfort level. Many participants like to mark their calendars with a few favorite “regulars” and then add special events as they pop up.

  • What if I don’t know anyone or feel nervous about coming alone?

It’s completely normal to feel a little unsure before trying something new, especially if you’ve been more home-based or haven’t been in a group setting for a while. Our staff, volunteers, and regular participants are used to welcoming newcomers and helping them feel comfortable and included. You’re always free to sit back and observe at first, or jump right in—whatever feels best for you. Over time, many people find that the center becomes one of the friendliest, most supportive places in their week.
