A Warm Meal and a Welcoming Table

Affordable congregate lunches for seniors in Mercer County

The Senior Lunch Program at Mercer County Council on Aging provides a hot, balanced meal on-site at the Celina senior center, typically every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 11:30 AM. Meals are offered at a low, subsidized rate—often around $5 per person—making them far more affordable than eating at a restaurant.

Food is prepared and served in partnership with trusted local providers, giving you a satisfying, home-style lunch without any grocery shopping, cooking, or dishes to wash. Reservations are requested by noon at least a day in advance so we can prepare enough meals, and transportation may be available if you need a ride to and from the center.

How the Lunch Program Works

Schedule, cost, and what to expect when you join us

Our lunch program is designed to make mealtime easy, social, and dependable for older adults who want both nutrition and connection. Each lunch includes a main entrée and sides, with menus published in our monthly newsletter so you can see what’s coming up and choose your favorite days. After lunch, many people stay for bingo, cards, or other activities, turning a simple meal into a full, enjoyable outing at the center. If you ever need a ride, our transportation team can often bring you in for lunch and take you home when you’re done.

When & Where

Lunch is served at the Celina senior center dining area on set weekdays (typically Tuesday–Thursday) at 11:30 AM, with doors opening a bit early so you can get settled.

Social Atmosphere

Seniors sit together at shared tables, enjoy conversation, and often see familiar faces week after week, making lunch feel like a family gathering rather than dining alone.

Senior Lunch Program FAQs

Details on who can attend, how to reserve, and what’s included

  • Who can take part in the Senior Lunch Program?

The lunch program is geared toward older adults, but in many cases seniors are welcome to bring a spouse, friend, or caregiver along. We especially encourage Mercer County seniors who live alone or find cooking difficult to join us regularly. Our goal is to make sure older adults in the community have a reliable, social place to enjoy a good meal. If there are any specific funding-related guidelines, we’ll explain them clearly when you call to reserve.

  • How much does lunch cost and how do I pay?

Meals are offered at a low, subsidized price—$5 per person—which helps cover food and preparation. You pay when you arrive for lunch, when a staff member comes to your table. Some families like to pre-pay for several meals as a gift for their loved one. We work hard to keep costs manageable for those on fixed incomes, so if someone truly can’t pay one week, they need to connect with Outreach so arrangements can be made, we still want them to come and eat.

  • Do I need to make a reservation, or can I just walk in?

Reservations are strongly recommended so we can prepare enough food for everyone and avoid waste. Calling by around noon the day before lunch is usually enough to reserve your spot for the next day. If you stop in without a reservation, we’ll do our best to serve you if extra meals are available, but we can’t always guarantee it. Making a quick call ahead helps ensure there’s a seat and plate waiting just for you.

  • What kind of food is served, and can I see the menu ahead of time?

Meals typically include a main entrée (such as meatloaf, chicken, or pasta), side dishes like vegetables or salad, and sometimes dessert or fruit. Menus are published in our monthly newsletter and posted at the center so you can plan around your tastes and dietary needs. Special days might feature themed meals, birthday celebrations, or Lunch & Learn programs with a guest speaker. If you have dietary questions or restrictions, our staff can help you choose the days that work best.

  • Can I get transportation to and from lunch?

Yes, transportation is often available through our senior transportation service for those who need a ride to the center. When you call to reserve your meal, just mention that you also need a ride, and we’ll work to coordinate pickup and drop-off times. This service makes it possible for seniors who no longer drive—or who are nervous about winter roads or busy traffic—to still enjoy regular lunches and time with friends. Families often feel reassured knowing their loved one is eating well and has a safe, reliable way to get there and back.
